Vast amounts of untouched snow. With precipitation from the sea in the west and an inland climate from the east, the snow lies deep and untouched around the Sognefjord for a long time.

Geographically located in the rainfall belt between east and west, there is normally a lot of snow throughout the winter.

As you can see, the possibilities are many and unique!

Sognefjord has been named one of the world's best travel destinations several times and even though the images are beautiful you really have to experience it to fully understand why. When you leave here, you know it.

Magical caves under the glacier.

As one of very few places in the whole world, you can join a unique journey under the Jostedal glacier!
Cold winters with freezing temperatures stop the melting and motion of the ice. The possibilities open up for you to experience the magical and unique blue ice caves. Join professional guides from Jostedal Hotel on an unforgettable journey you will remember for the rest of your life. Remember to bring your camera!

It's an out of this world experience. The sapphire blue light, the silence, the fresh icy air.

We just call it "Escape from the ordinary"

On the Sognefjord.

Winter is pure, silent and full of contrasts. Especially out on the fjord itself, it is unique. The light, the sounds, the landscape. A RIB tour in the UNESCO listed area between Flåm and Gudvangen is a memory for life. You won't find a better place for reflection than on an adventurous trip with FjordSafari Norway.

Have you ever tried deep-water fishing in the world's longest inhabited fjord? Try your luck fishing with DripFiske. Or perhaps a mini-expedition and fishing rod together with Balestrand Fjord Angling.

Bulder & Brak will gladly take you on an exceptionally beautiful journey in a kayak midwinter. Yes, you read that right. In good warm dry suits it's like paddling in the summer.

We just call it "Sognefjord a winter odyssey"

Above the fjord.

Several of the attractions around the Sognefjord are available all year round. The Stegastein viewpoint is one of them. If possible, it is even more beautiful during winter. It is the feeling of nature that resets itself before a new green summer season. There are much less visitors during the winter. You get more of the fjord to yourself and get closer to travelling like a local.

The unique Flåm Railway has been named the world's most beautiful train journey. You can combine the journey with the Bergen Railway so you can travel by public transport from Oslo or Bergen, and when you are in Flåm, you can go on a fjord cruise as a part of the trip. All emission free! Now that is sustainabilty. Check out Norway in a Nutshell or Sognefjord in a Nutshell winter by Fjordtours. A journey with Flåmsbana (the Flåm Railway) in winter is like traveling through Disney's magical Frozen world.

The Sognefjord has two ski resorts, a perfect playground for the whole family. From powder hounds to the first journey. Children's slopes and groomed trails. Sogndal Ski Resort is steadily climbing up the national rankings of the country's best ski resort. Sogn Ski Resort is no worse. What both have in common is that they also offer some of the country's best powder when the conditions are at their best, which they often are.

We just call it "The poetry of earth”

In the mountains.

Around the Sognefjord there are lots of mountains, high mountains, some of the highest in Northern Europe. With precipitation from the west and an inland climate from the east, combined with it’s proximity to the large glacier, it means that the area has among the most stable snow conditions in the country. We are talking about meters of dry natural snow. You can find perfect summit hiking mountains everywhere. The fjord view is just a bonus. We recommend using a guide on several of the trips. Read more about guided ski touring here

We just call it "Earn your turns"

Sauna Fjord.

Sauna trends, also around the Sognefjord. You can get all the health benefits of a sauna stay here. In addition, with the world's most beautiful view and combined with a bath in the world's longest ice-free fjord, a unique experience. How about putting together your own sauna tour around the Sognefjord?

We just call it "you gotta sauna when you wanna"

Explore the area on snowshoes.

Snowshoeing has become super popular. More and more people are opening their eyes to this form of easy tours outside in the winter. Snowshoes originated over six thousand years ago. Join a walking tour with a guide, or explore on your own. Fjord views, glacier or bonfire in the forest?

We just say "We didn't realize we were making beautiful memories we just knew we were having fun."

Sleep well.

There are plenty of unique accommodation around the Sognefjord that are open all year round. Common to all is that it is much quieter this time of the year. There is room for space and recreation. Preferably close to and in nature. You don't need many days here to reset yourself ready for a new start. But of course the longer the better, we want you to stay as long as possible.

Breathe in breathe out, we say it like it is "Winter, a lingering season, is a time to gather golden moments, embark upon a beautiful journey, and enjoy every idle hour."

What you have seen above is only a very small sample of everything the Sognefjord has to offer this winter.

Here you can read more about experiences with or without skis on your feet.

Welcome to the Sognefjord this winter!
