Food traditions in Balestrand
Balestrand's food traditions are based on what is typical for fjord and western fjord villages. Livestock husbandry, hunting and fishing as well as general agriculture. But fruit growing and the horticulture industry in particular are important. Balestrand, like several other fjord villages around the Sognefjord, has very good growing conditions for fruit.
Due to the climate and good drainage in lush moraine soil that is left over from the big glaciers and ice ages. As a result of good fruit and the fact that from around 1850 Balestrand was one of the most important tourist towns in Western Norway, Balestrand was thus one of the first municipalities in the country with commercial berry cultivation.
