Ole Town of Lærdalsøyri
Old Lærdalsøyri - Experience the protected wooden house town that has been crucial for trade and communication since the Middle Ages.
Old Town of Lærdalsøyri is one of Scandinavia’s most authentic wooden townships, today with small shops, bakery, café and museum.
The old town dates back to the 12th century and became a trading town from the 16th century. In 1841 it was to receive city status.
Lærdalsøyri was an important traffic hub between east and west. Trade, transport and cultural exchange took place here between easterners and westerners, mainly during the annual Lærdal market.
Today you can experience shopping in old buildings from the19 century, walk along narrow streets or enjoy a coffee in street cafés. You can visit the bakery, post and telecommunications museum etc. You will find local food, sweets, souvenirs, antiques. And you can spend the night in old hotels, guest houses or in small charming wooden houses.
Or just sit down and enjoy the atmosphere.
There is a daily guided old town walk in town. Local guides talk about medieval market days, rich traders, poor day workers, class divisions, architecture and history - served in Norwegian and English language.
