Kraken – From the Depths of the Sognefjord
Sognefjord - The Home of Kraken
What is the Kraken?
The Kraken is a mythical sea monster from Nordic folklore—described as enormous, with long arms capable of dragging ships down into the depths. The myth originally arose in Norwegian waters, and the Kraken has spread fear among sailors for centuries.
The Kraken in the Sognefjord?
The Sognefjord is the deepest fjord in the world. Dark and mysterious, it has provided fertile ground for legends. There are many tales, and some say that powerful currents, whirlpools, or sudden waves could be signs of the Kraken. Sudden changes in fishing fortune were sometimes explained by the monster being nearby.
When the Sognefjord lies still, it is because something down there is listening.

Beitelen – Is the Kraken Lying Dormant?
Beneath the mountain Beitelen in Aurland, the fjord is unnaturally deep and the currents run in crisscrossing patterns. The mountain is dark and sharp, jutting out over the fjord like a pointing hand. Here, oars have been torn from people’s hands and echo sounders have fallen silent, according to legend.
