Far inside the Sognefjord you’ll find the Sogn Fjord Museum, situated in idyllic surroundings on the Kaupanger ferry dock. The old sawmill houses an impressive collection of historical Sogn boats, a reconstructed boat builder’s workshop, boat building tools and traditional fishing equipment. You’ll also be able to visit Glaværstova from the 1800s – probably the oldest bar in Sogn!

Historically, the fjord was a source of food and income, as well as a means of transportation, making it a prerequisite for the Sogn settlements and way of life. The fjord acted as a food bank, containing cod, haddock, saithe, pollack, halibut, cusk, herring, sprat, salmon and trout – a plentiful food source that people learned to take advantage of. Amongst the steep mountain sides lining the Sognefjord, boats also remained the only sensible mode of transportation.

The history of Sogn cannot be understood without including the fjord as a central element.

In the main building you will also find a small café and kiosk. Enjoy a fresh cup of organic coffee or a cooling ice cream cone, right beside Norway's longest and deepest fjord, the Sognefjord!
